We’re eager to help you get to know Hartford better: Let us walk you through some of what’s special about “New England’s rising star”!

History of Hartford

Native Americans were the first founders of the area that would eventually become greater Hartford, Connecticut. Dutch settlers were likely the first Europeans to arrive in the early 1600s, and they established a trading fort. Meanwhile, Thomas Hooker, a Puritan minister, led a group from England to the outskirts of Boston, but when Boston wasn’t the right fit, Hooker and his followers went to Connecticut, where they established a settlement near the Dutch fort. This small community needed to create its own government because it was outside of the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The result was a document called the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, which was ratified in 1639 and would later inspire both the Connecticut Constitution and the U.S. Constitution.

Facts About Connecticut’s Capital

Hartford is the capital of Connecticut, and it’s also considered to be the insurance capital of the world due to the many insurance companies that have built their headquarters in the city. Hartford has the distinction of being one of the oldest cities in America, and as such, it is the home of many historic attractions. Hartford is surrounded by towns including West Hartford, East Hartford, Bloomfield, and South Windsor. At one time, the Park River divided Hartford into a north and a south section. However, conduits were constructed to move the river’s flow underground in the 1940s as a measure to control flooding. On the western edge of Hartford County lies Farmington Valley, which includes the Farmington River and its watershed area.
